A recent study shows that nearly 80% of the population between ages 18 to 44 keep cell phones with them almost every waking minute. Most estimates showing only having two hours a day without their phone in or near their hands. The stress of constantly looking down at a phone or device creates a dangerous condition known as “tech neck”. Body and spinal design do not come equipped with enduring the constant and sustained neck pressure. The need for chiropractic care continually grows as more people of all ages realize the imperative need to preserve the health and quality of life for both themselves and the next generation.

According to a 2017 study titled “Text Neck” published in the Spine Journal, spine surgeons noted a significant rise in the number of patients complaining of neck and upper back pain. Many of the patients were children. The research showed that “text neck” added extreme amounts of pressure and tension on the spine as the head position extended forward and downward to look at an electronic device. The average head weight on the neck amounts to between 10 to 12 pounds when resting in a neutral position. Any forward head flexion will add weight and pressure to the spine at varying degrees. Every 15 degrees of forward neck flexion adds between 9 and pounds of pressure on the spine. 60 degrees of forward flexion creates an extra 60 pounds of pressure on the spine. Neck flexion varies between 45 and 60 degrees when texting. A new diagnosis code called “text neck” has been established to categorize and address the damage incurred by common daily activities like using electronic devices.

A study of over 7000 young adults showed that persistent neck and upper back pain directly associates with time spent text messaging. Accelerated neck and mid-back spinal degeneration becomes a likely side effect of the forward head flexion often experienced through texting. The increase in disc pressure during flexion contributes to disc degeneration, disc herniations, and abnormal neck curve alignment.

Chiropractic remains one of the most important and effective proactive interventions needed to minimize and reverse the negative effects of texting. A study published in 2019 explained the effects of postural health on fourth grade children. One of the primary objectives of the study meant to find out if bad posture influenced the self-esteem of fourth graders.

The study involved 108 students. Facilitators assigned each student a randomized variable of assuming either a ‘high power’ pose or a ‘low power’ pose. Each student held the posture for one minute. The children were then evaluated using a standard self-esteem assessment.

High power posing consists of the non-verbal expression of power through expansive, open body postures. This stance becomes known as power posing. High power posing links to hormonal and behavioral changes. High power posing affects psychological processes, including feelings of empowerment and other emotional benefits. Students in high power posing showed a higher self-esteem, better mood, and more positive feelings regarding the student-teacher relationship. The findings show consistency with postural intervention effects in children and self-esteem elevation. This study revealed that good posture produced a large-scale effect on school related self-esteem.

The study involved asymptomatic fourth grade children. Improving posture for just one minute resulted in meaningful improvements in mood, emotions and self-esteem. The findings proved consistent with those seen in patients of all ages in Chiropractic clinics all over the world. A study completed in 2007 selected a random group of individuals who had never experienced any back or neck pain. The subjects were split into two groups. One group received a real chiropractic adjustment, and the other group received a placebo, or fake adjustment. Study subjects were not aware of which group they were in. The group that received a real adjustment experienced an average reduction in blood pressure of 27 points (17 systolic and 10 diastolic). The study conclusion showed the benefits achieved by those receiving a chiropractic adjustment mirrored a reduction in blood pressure that would normally require two blood pressure medications.

The natural outcome of the adjustments worked as if the subjects were taking two blood pressure medications given in combination.
